Rangers at Sabres - First Period Thoughts

It's amazing the difference an opponent makes. The Sabres are an shorthanded team right now and one that is not nearly as good as the one we saw Tuesday night up in Montreal.

The Rangers did not play well that period. They did not force the issue on Miller despite the 2 goals. 7 shots on a goalie who hasn't proven he can stop a beach ball tonight is not enough. They need to get to the net, get shots, and pounce on rebounds. Henrik let up a softie, the Rangers didn't draw any penalties and took 2. They are very fortunate to be leading at this point in the game.

About Staal and Avery standing up for their teammates...while I am undoubtedly in favor of throwing your body around to send a message, it seems somewhat uncalled for in this game. The Rangers are a better team than the Sabres and desperately need 2 points. It's not worth it to take stupid penalties just to prove toughness. The Rangers should be able to walk into this game and pull out a W without the unnecessary penalties.
