Past Trade Rumor?

According to the NY Post Rangers general manager Glen Sather rejected a deal at the trade deadline that would have sent now Buffalo Sabre Steve Bernier to the Rangers in exchange for Sean Avery.

If this is true all aspects of the trade on the surface point to it being a questionable move by Sather. Bernier is a young power winger with enormous potential while Avery is set to become an UFA. However, I believe this decision by Sather is very encouraging. In passing up the opportunity to acquire a good young player for a potential FA, Sather has shown his commitment to and belief in the 2007-08 New York Rangers team. In keeping Avery, Sather has shown that he thinks the Rangers can and will make a run this year.

Sean Avery is an integral part of the New York Rangers. A trade involving him, in my opinion, is almost impossible. Most teams don't understand the impact that Avery can have on a team and therefore would be unwilling to offer what we as Rangers fans would view as a fair package. Bernier is a solid player with a bright future but I am certainly happy to still have Avery in Ranger blue.
